Get to know the filmmaker:

The polarization I’ve been experiencing in my country over the past decade has had me pondering what on Earth could drive humanity together…not saying “Others” is the answer, but I wanted to tell a story about two very different people misperceiving one another while experiencing the same isolation or loneliness. The sci fi alien stuff came from an experience I had in 2009 that left me very open minded, so I thought that might be a fun way to get us there in the film.

EP. 1166 - Filmmaker Trevor Motes (THE FABULOUS MISADVENTURES OF PIZZA BOY)

Get to know the filmmaker:

In 2022, I began my final year at college/film school. I looked back at the previous 3 years of film school and felt unsatisfied with my experience. I wasn’t known for doing anything cool or creative at my school, nobody asked me to be on their sets, and when they did, they only wanted me as an actor, a grip, or to use my truck to tow equipment. I felt unseen and like I wasn’t valued amongst my classmates. I decided for my senior thesis, I wanted to prove everyone wrong, and I ended up writing, producing, directing, acting, producing music for, marketing, editing, and publicly premiering this on my own, and the effect was way bigger than I thought it would be. The hype leading up to this being released became well known at my school. I was underestimated and underused for a long time, but in the end I finally proved my value and worth.

EP. 1061 - Filmmaker William Allum (NIGHT FEED)

NIGHT FEED, 1min., UK
Directed by William Allum
Late one night a baby is terrorised by a monster in their room.

Get to know the filmmaker:

My wife and I had just had our first baby, and the country was just about to go into lockdown with COVID.
After many sleepless nights, and no family able to visit, it was just the three of us in a very small flat. Locked in with this tiny screaming thing, I wondered what it must look like from her perspective, maybe I am some kind of scary looming thing for her. The shoot was very quick, with all the post work taking “a bit” longer, it was a good project to take my mind of things.

March 15, 2023 - Filmmaker Ryan Jafri (THE CALL)

THE CALL, 14min., USA, Thriller
Directed by Ryan Jafri
1965. A small man in a big world works hard to close a deal, doing everything he can to please his boss. But the clock is ticking, and someone is out to get him.

Get to know the filmmaker:

I’ve always been intrigued by films that have compelling stories told within the confines of few settings. So when the image of just one character in a single room came in front of my mind’s eye, I knew it was just a mere seedling of my next film. Despite The Call taking place in 1965, its representation of the effects of corporate culture, work burnout and fear of being replaced for any reason transcends eras. Therefore, I saw The Call as an opportunity to create a depiction of the anxious and paranoid times we live in.

Get to know writer Jennifer Kurani:

The motivation to make this film came from the desire to spread a very important message about believing in yourself. Everyone truly is special in their own way! When you believe in yourself, you’re accepting who you really are. You’re not afraid to give your opinion and you’re going to be proud of this person you’re becoming. When you believe in yourself you feel like you can handle the world! Positive energy and a little confidence gives a major lift. Believing that you are special gives you the strength and ability to accomplish goals. Deep down inside, you know you can do anything.

February 7, 2023 - Screenwriter Olivia Belluck (READY TO MINGLE)

Ready to Mingle follows Dr. Millie Ward, a defensive self-help columnist for the clickbait-dependent news site Nova Press. Millie thrives on applying her analytical mind to patients she cannot see, snuggled in sweaters that ensure that no one can ever see her. After a lifetime of being told she would never be enough because of her weight and her harsh disposition, she has resigned herself to living on the sidelines of everyone else’s fairy tale. That is until she is needed at the last minute to cover Nova’s behind-the-scenes column for “Ready to Mingle’s” 25th season. “Ready to Mingle” prides itself on using its famed algorithm to produce 5 perfect couples in just 10 weeks, with one being voted as “Most Likely to Last.” But as Millie immerses herself on-set, questions are raised about the psychological implications of such a show, both on its lovers and society itself. Soon Millie finds herself on a mission to dismantle the toxic fantasy “Ready to Mingle” has cultivated, to change the math, to prove that love doesn’t always follow a pattern.

LILI, 15min., Puerto Rico, Drama/Thriller
Directed by Brian Rios
A father and daughter must cross the border in order to find a better life, but the daughter cannot speak.

From filmmaker Brian Rios:

My main motivation was to humanize and make people feel empathy for the immigrants coming into America, especially the children that were being separated from their parents. I wanted to make a short film that could get to the emotional core of an audience member no matter what their personal politics are.

Director Statement

As an aspiring filmmaker, I hope to explore stories through my work that deal with subjects and groups not typically represented in mainstream media. My aim is to bring a little more sympathy and love into this world through representation and understanding. I hope that by showcasing situations and people that society often neglects or mistreats in a more humanistic and empathetic lens, we can learn to relate to each other on an emotional level despite any differences in life experiences.
