Get to know writer/producer Graham John Lamb:

What motivated you to make this film?

I was Virtual Production Supervisor on a film in Singapore, when the IMDA (InfoComm Media Development Authority Singapore) announced that they were funding projects in this particular area. My producer, director and director of photography were at the time over in the UK at the National Film and Television School also attending a Virtual Production immersion program aimed at industry professionals to learn about this new way of film making. So excited with this new surge of enthusiasm I asked Jeffrey about joining this content creation initiative and we all got together and created Tainted.

What were your initial reactions when watching the audience talking about your film in the feedback video?

Honestly I got a little teary, when I was looking at the reviews, I am greatly appreciative that the reviewers talk about the whole film in general from stunts, makeup, sound & music to performance and that really shows that the team was really the best – such a dynamic group all around and I have nothing but high praise for everyone involved.

What motivated you to make this film?

I would say my love for the 90’s Anime “Cowboy Bebop”. I knew I wanted to make something that resonated with people who also appreciate that sort of Jazzy Sci Fi noir style of storytelling. Making films that I love with the people I love is always the goal!

What were your initial reactions when watching the audience talking about your film in the feedback video?

Oh geez, at first extremely nervous, but after hearing what everyone had to say, I was pleasantly surprised! It is a surreal feeling to hear people talk about how they experienced something you made, and even more surreal to hear how it connected with them. Truly loved their input!

I also wanted to challenge myself with this story (this was the largest budget and production for one of my shorts). I love anything to do with time travel, but I wanted to try and make a film that reject the conventions of mainstream sci-fi films, and instead focuses on the why rather than the what. To produce a really gritty first film, a caustic collision of beauty and abrasion, where the abrasion slowly grinds it’s way deep into the human soul, to produce a thought-provoking kick ass Sci Fi film. Something quite cruel in parts, that mirror life at times, but then also had the sun shine, daydream. I also feel as a society we have lost connection with our spiritual side, so I wanted hints of the importance of the human soul through the film, like the Daydream charity, and I left little easter eggs in the film for people to figure out, what my next film is about, and also the three door theme that runs through the film. Ancient lost civilizations used this in most of there pyramids, it symbolizes our third eye, and the importance of balance in the world. Did you also notice the connection to the last supper painting.

What motivated you to make this film?

The Pandemic had shut down production. I wanted to make a film, so I decided to use Virtual Production techniques in Unreal Engine to make one on my computer. I wanted to show how cinematic and beautiful a film using Virtual Production can be, while moving the audience emotionally. I also wasn’t going to miss the opportunity to make a film featuring robots, space travel and exotic alien planets. I love that stuff, but you don’t get to do it much because they are very expensive to do in live action. Virtual Production makes them possible even on the limited budget of a short film.

Director Statement

I made this film because I was always fascinated with the story of the mysterious Black Knight Satellite. Years later when I heard how passionate Billy Carson was about the topic and his views on where he believed it originated from, I thought this would be an opportunity to open up this investigation in a new way. There are many twists and turns throughout the film, suggesting there is more than one outcome. I thoroughly enjoyed the journey of working with Billy and gaining his knowledge.

His films and stories have been screened and published in Canada, the US, and Europe. In October, 2021, Adam completed his MA in Creative Writing with Distinction from Teesside University, UK (distance). His award-winning play "The Anorak" is to be produced for the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in August, 2022.
