Type of Script: TV spec script for the tv show Firefly

The pain caused by the bounty hunter, Jubal Early, in the finale of Season Two still echoes. When the crew of Firefly are infected with a mysterious and deadly airborne virus with dark links to River’s past, Simon must choose between saving the crew and saving his sister.

A spec script of the tv show Firefly. The pain caused by the bounty hunter, Jubal Early, in the finale of Season Two still echoes. When the crew of the spaceship Serenity are infected with a mysterious and deadly airborne virus with dark links to River’s past, Simon must choose between saving the crew and saving his sister.

I was really interested in how the crew in a confined space would react to a deadly disease. Bullets and fist fights can be faced head on, but disease is more insidious and plays on different fears. Infection makes everyone suspect.

Cheap, Sexy, and Shocking! is loosely based on the career of Louise Downe who played a significant role in the exploitation cinema movement in the 1960s and early 1970s. Her contributions as an actor, screenwriter, assistant director, and designer are a noteworthy chapter in twentieth century cinema history, but her efforts have been routinely overlooked, as she has been overshadowed by her moviemaking partner, the king of gore, Herschell Gordon Lewis.

There was an amazing confluence of events that led to this film. This film was born out of a conversation with the lead actress, Charlotte Rothwell. It was the height of the Covid lock down and we were discussing Post Traumatic Stress Syndrome, specifically my own struggles with PTSD. She asked if I had ever written about it. Given the times, I thought it was an especially relatable topic, though I had no interest in writing anything autobiographical. As we were speaking, breaking news came over the television of a mass shooting in Colorado. If you’re asking yourself which one, that’s the point? That same week my brilliant friend Staci Witt called me and asked me to write something for her to produce.

EP. 1039 - Writer/Producer Belinda Gosbee (AMEND)

Get to know writer/producer Belinda Gosbee:

I was so desperate to express what I was feeling about gun violence in America. As a foreigner (Australian) I was constantly in a state of disbelief/anger/fear/confoundment over the gun issue. And that nothing was being done. And then I read an article about some survivors from Columbine and it was very eye opening. I felt horrified that I’d never thought about them before. We all react heavily to the event and then things go back to the status quo and these people who are deemed to be the “lucky ones” are left with a life that is barely a life at all in many cases. I mean the suicide rates are very high and even decades later many survivors have not been able to move on and live their lives. And that’s just the emotional trauma. Some have severe injuries that physically prevent them from truly “living” as well.

The trauma is almost insurmountable and there are very little resources to even begin to help them (though some organizations are starting to crop up today). They’re like combat vets who never left their “safe” American towns.

So I started thinking about what that might look like. How might it completely destroy your life? What if you tried to run away and it just kept following you? How might guilt and PTSD consume you? The memories? What if no one in this “new” life you’ve created even had an inkling of what you’ve experienced? And what if the very thing you were running from (the thing you once loved – kids) was the very thing that suddenly turned up in your life. What if they were the only way forward?

I was always adamant that this film needed to be about the aftermath of gun violence, about survivors. Not the event. But when we did finally show a peek of the “event” it would be minimal. Terrifying but extremely restricted.

What I loved was that our director, Jianna Maarten Saada, absolutely took that up a notch. She was like – “It’s all in the sound” and she was spot-on. If you rewatch the ending you’ll realise how very little you are actually seeing outside of Rachael’s face but the SOUND is leading you astray. The sound design (Thanks, Jeremy Jardine) is what’s truly terrifying you in those seconds.

Get to know writer P. James Norris:

I took Aaron Sorkin’s Masterclass on screenwriting in 2018 and our first assignment was to adapt a short story as a no more than 10 page screenplay. In 1960, the Democratic Republic of the Congo has recently been evacuated by Belgian forces in the face of violent uprisings, leaving new Prime Minister Patrice Lumumba’s, 35, shaky government to ward off both America and Russia, who contend for the rich natural resources of uranium, diamonds, copper, and cobalt. The capital city of Kinshasa is war-torn and violent, prone to constant uprisings and full of security checkpoints. Fires and gunfights rage day and night.

Michael McClung on why the script should be made into a film:

We are still dealing with both the political ramifications, and the resource predation, in sub-Saharan Africa today. The events shown in KISS OF DARKNESS have affected hundreds of millions over the decades, and there has been virtually no attention paid (or restitution demanded) for the CIA’S role in this tragedy.

In the comedy-drama DOG PARK, the deliberate poisoning of a dog forces three lonely people’s lives to collide.

Get to know the writer:

In DOG PARK, the deliberate poisoning of a dog forces three lonely people’s lives to collide.

MARGARET, 65, is a disciplined retiree who wakes before dawn to bake treats for her devoted mutt Rambo, then spends the day coordinating the volunteers who maintain the dog park. CARRIE, 27, is a frazzled nurse at Seattle Children’s Hospital who can’t keep her hyperactive Weimaraner Jean Luc from knocking over strangers or her boyfriends from leaving her. VIET, 30, is an assistant manager at the local hardware store who cares for his infant nephew and toddler niece in an extended family household. The perfect Vietnamese-Catholic son, his only self-indulgence is when he steals away to the bramble-filled, dirt paths of the lower woods for fleeting moments of pleasure with anonymous men.

Through everyday intimacies and betrayals, they find that perhaps it’s through our lack of control—over our dogs and our own desires—that we discover moments of grace.

Get to know the writer:

The script fits right in with the suspense genre as the characters up the ante in their competition. There’s a sense of dread that builds throughout the story and isn’t let go of until the final page. With two character’s stuck together, drama plays as big a role in keeping things interesting and emotional. You can think of Inkwell as a mini-episode of The Twilight Zone.

A short, short film about finding magic and the trauma of sudden loss when that magic goes away.

Get to know the writer:

This is a short film that I feel reaches out to people who are struggling with the pain of losing a child. It’s such a common occurrence but so rarely presented accurately in media. I want to touch on the joy and then the sudden, heartbreaking moment when you learn you’ve lost the miracle–the magic–you were so immersed in. A silent loss, which is depicted in the film, is when you have no idea that the fetus inside you has failed to thrive, which is different from a physical loss. It’s a different thing to process and it’s incredibly difficult.
I hope the film will reach out to people and show them they are not alone in their grief. And I hope it will give medical professionals or others involved in ob/gyn services a tool to offer those who are grieving.

65 years from now, humanity is at the edge of extinction.
Countless countries have crumbled under the weight of a rapidly collapsing global economy. Many of the largest cities of our time have been wiped out by great wildfires or swallowed by rising seas. An unending heat stroke chokes all living things that remain; vast droughts, punishing plagues and forced migrations have ignited global conflict on an unprecedented scale. As our descendants fight for dwindling resources, children born during this time enter a shadow world of our own…inheriting a new Dark Age. But deep in the darkness, a lone ember of hope burns…

Get to know the screenwriter:

Endure is ultimately about humanity’s final fight for survival on an uninhabitable Earth. At the story’s center is a protagonist who we watch come-of-age on a planet and in an American society that is quickly decaying and collapsing in on itself. He’s the product of two parents who, on the surface couldn’t be any different – his mother is a champion of idealism and enduring hope while his father is a pragmatic isolationist who’s been forever traumatized by the atrocities he’s witnessed as soldier. But they have one very strong bond in common – and that is their deep love for their son – who they struggle to raise as society seems to be falling apart around them. Our hero ultimately grows up to embody both the best and worst aspects of his parents’ personalities as he follows in his father’s footsteps and becomes a loyal and lethal soldier. In the name of his country, he’ll commit his own atrocities – but later be given a chance at ultimate redemption as humanity’s last hope for survival.

My screenplay is essentially about human conflict. I wanted to express how uniquely strange and traumatic the experience of being in a warzone is for all those involved. It is an environment of extremes and one that, in my opinion at least, can only be expressed visually.
