“Some people are only happy when they’re not.”

Get to know the filmmaker:
Last year I met artist/animator/producer Casey Follen while working on a freelance job. Several times a year Casey and her partners release a compilation of animated shorts called Animation Wild Card. It’s a fun platform for independent animation artists to collaborate and showcase super short-shorts created just for the joy of animating. The only requirements are that the films be animated and have a runtime somewhere between 15 and 90 seconds. Casey invited me to submit a film for an upcoming episode, so I tried to come up with an idea that would be fun to animate and could tell a worthwhile story in a minute or less. Aubrey Grump is what I ended up with.

I wanted to learn how to make a movie, and I’d already written a long article about Jude Acers and I knew he would be a great subject for a documentary. And I was inclined to make a documentary rather other genres because it’s perhaps the most forgiving genre when it comes to technical proficiency, which seemed important since I didn’t know what I was doing.

Get to know the filmmaker:

I’ve been wanting to get involved in community film projects for a while but I hadn’t found something worth contributing to, until this Cancer Research project came along. And it’s all thanks to the funding from the London Borough of Sutton. This was a film production that embraced all humankind, at a time when we were all breaking out of the isolation invoked by the COVID pandemic. Strangely, the subject matter, came second to my thoughts when undertaking this film, although only because of the sensitivity in handling a topic as affecting as cancer.

Get to know the filmmaker:
Answer: This film is loosely based on a personal experience of a family emergency and essentially a love letter to my parents about that time. It was during that uncertain chapter of my life, I noticed how much comedy played a role in helping me cope with difficult situations. As time passed, I found I was best able to sort through my feelings best by writing this script and using it as a way to express those tougher to verbalize emotions. As I come into my own style of filmmaking, I’ve discovered I’m drawn to stories that tackle difficult topics wrapped in a warm fuzzy comedy blanket; this was the first of (hopefully) many more stories like that.

LEFT ON OUR OWN, 27min., Hungary, Drama/Art
Directed by Akos Kovacs
An elderly taxi driver, who happens to be a tireless storyteller, is a man of contradictions: a hopeless romantic and a crude observer of life who has lived through individual hardship and witnessed the despair of others. He doesn’t hold back while roaming the streets of Budapest: the route to the destination leads through the labyrinth of his own memories and emotions, which his words conjure. Friends and strangers, cheap décor, lonely buildings, a life-long correspondence that encapsulates a relationship, numbing melodies from an ancient music box all swirl and blend in this film’s poetic vision. Sensitive writing and emotional cinematography draws the attention to small details, to personal hopes and everyday tragedies. A hypnotic, haunting and tranquil soundtrack gives eerily gentle force to the old man’s tales.

Get to know the filmmaker:

I’ve been something of a film aficionado all my life. I was 16 when I attended a so called ‘youth film club’ where all the classic Italian Cinecittá greats were screened, you know, Fellini, Pasolini, Antonioni, the works. Talk about love at first sight. I was thrilled, mesmerized, enchanted and, most of all, intellectually intrigued. My parents were shocked to learn I was not willing to follow the family tradition of attending law school. I respect such Hungarian filmmakers as George Cukor, István Szabó, Lajos Koltai or Vilmos Zsigmond who became Hollywood legends, and love the great Hungarian trailblazing directors who never got their much deserved international break, but are geniuses nonetheless, like Zoltán Huszárik or Károly Makk. They paved the way for aspiring filmmakers like myself. I’m also a big Tarkovski fan, as you might have guessed by our short film’s first scenes that are a dedicated hommage to the opening sequence of Stalker. I’m also an avid reader of literature, be it John Updike or Gabriel Garcia Marquez. I couldn’t write anything if not for the books that left their marks on me. Without my love for the great Czech author Bohumil Hrabal my taxi driver character surely couldn’t have been born.

WIN(D) OVER CANCER, 9min., USA
Directed by Andrew Jowett
Last summer the world was closed, but our waters were open. This crew took the opportunity to make a difference – More Kids On Sailboats, a 501(c)(3) organization is proud to present our first short film – WIN(D) OVER CANCER.

https://morekidsonsailboats.org/
https://www.instagram.com/more_kids_on_sailboats/

Get to know the producer Brett Langolf:
The motivation was the desire to do SOMETHING! My wife, Katie, and I were sitting in the dining room both working (pandemic online elementary school teacher and me trying to run a Creative Advertising department remotely) and we started talking. We had just received our 501(c)(3) status for our non-profit More Kids On Sailboats. We decided to find a path to do something with kids and activate them in these crazy times. Andrew was involved in the new non-profit and was one of our new Board Members. In the real world, he and I had been doing TV Commercials, Sailing Shorts, etc but it was the pandemic and this work had taken a pause. Getting a group together outdoors was basically our only option. So we plotted the course, and we got this crew together….we were not sure what would unfold or what may or might not happen. So we hit record and let the story come to us.

Two refugees from a broken land have to fight their way into civilization.

From Chuck Johnson:

The original concept for “Almost There” came about when I had found that bridge. At the time, I was taking a lessons for a motorcycle license at a driving school and I saw it in the distance. I walked over to it to take a look and the look and feel of the location itself was the original spark for the idea of the film. It stayed in the back of my head for a while; but after seeing what was happening in the Ukraine and the number of people that were becoming displaced; I wanted to make it a story about refugees. And given that I am an immigrant to Japan myself, it was already a topic that was close to my heart.

The mental health impact of religion on the LGBTQIA+ community is unchecked and misunderstood. Alone and largely ignored, queer individuals from conservative, religious communities commit suicide at alarming rates. How many must die before we start talking about it?

https://thingsweshouldnttalkabout.com/

From Robbie Kruithoff:

This film first started when I was doing research for my memoir. Growing up the gay son of two Pentecostal Pastors from a small town in Australia, I know first hand the mental health struggles that religious trauma and suicide survivors face in the religious world. What I didn’t know was how prevalent suicide among religious queer individuals is in today’s society. This spurred me to find other survivors to understand the issues a little better.

New Studies reveal that growing our existing forested lands to capture carbon, preserve biodiversity and protect water, animals and people is one of the best tools we have for fighting climate change and rebuilding a thriving planet. Experts with a deep understanding of forests, carbon and timber share the science and methods we can use to take a step toward a greener, healthier future.

From Andrea Sparrow:

I’ve been making art and photography and writing about climate change and human impact on the planet for a long time. When my colleague, Ben Elkins, asked me to make a film with him about a small forest in Oregon, called the Elliot State Forest, I started reading the science and talking with scientists and conservationists about the forests, wood products and climate change. The issues were huge! The film quickly morphed from being about this tiny forest to talking about these big, valuable forests in our country that are being exploited in unsustainable ways.

THE AFTERMATH, 7min., USA, Poem
Directed by LaChelle Joy Hunt
LaChelle Hunt’s “The Aftermath”, is a moody Common Era drama atop the windy seaside hills of Point Reyes. Evelyn arrives in California in 1912 after traveling across America to pursue her dreams once shared with another. She deals with being alone on this journey and looks through her darkness to find a new light.

From LaChelle on her biggest obstacle making the film:

Myself. Advice to other filmmakers, don’t let your mind stop you from creating something! Just do it and then if it works great and if it doesn’t you will learn no matter what! But in terms of physical obstacles filming outdoors was definitely challenging. We were lucky to have so much sun but had some pretty windy moments. The wind made it hard to shoot but it also looked great on camera.
