A visual Journey of remembrance in Amsterdam.

From filmmaker Maclovia G. Martel:

The producers of the film Michael Potter and Margaret McCarhty lived on the canal in Amsterdam where this particular Stumbling Stone project to honor Holocaust victims took place. We felt a tremendous amount of satisfaction connecting with the audience and really appreciating that we were successful communicating a powerful and meaningful message in a short film.

KEEP COOL: FORTIFYING BRITISH COLUMBIA, 30min.,
Directed by Ed Akselrud
In 2017 and 2018 British Columbia experienced devastating wildfires that reshaped the province. From the ashes, a surprisingly complex “war machine” arose to reforest the scarred land. Keep Cool: Fortifying British Columbia explores this machine, the key players involved, and the significance of government-designated Old Grown Management Areas in the province’s north.

Get to know the filmmaker:
At the risk of sounding cheesy, it was definitely the people we met and interviewed. The project was originally meant to be a 3-5 minute video, but when we arrived we were taken to so many sites and locations and introduced to so many people involved by our partner Zanzibar that I felt that this needed to be a bigger project. There are so many moving parts in forestry and we got to interact with so many (though not all) of them. So the planned runtime expanded from those 5 minutes, to 12-15, then to 20, and finally somehow landed at 30 minutes. Going in, I had no idea how much there was to this story and how many different people and characters were involved in this herculean effort, so I felt compelled to try and illustrate their work at the scale I thought it deserved.

Jorge Escompani is a “Shiringa” master, “Shiringa” is a tree which produces natural latex. This is considered a tradition that preserves great passion and environmental awareness. The extraction of latex from the Shiringa three led to the death of thousands of indigenous people due to slavery during “the fever of latex” in the 19th century.

Get to know the filmmaker:
My friend Joseph Neyra, who told me about this place in Iberia, Peru. Where was the “maestro” Jorge Escompani, who was one of the few artisan extractors of natural latex. And between the two of us we decided to make this documentary in the midst of a pandemic, traveling by plane to the jungle and then in a small bus with the windows almost closed at more than 28 degrees Celsius for 4-5 hours. The motivation, although it sounds crazy, was to venture, witness, and record something that is so deep that it is almost magical. I have always had this feeling that the best secrets are found in the depths of any person, in this case in the depths of my country.

Directed by Roberto Serrini
Penne Alla Vodka is America’s dirty little secret. You can have it hungover from the diner, or for 40 bucks a plate at the finest restaurants. While it’s secret origin might surprise you, it’s sordid history will baffle you, which is why two best friends decided to deep dive into this disco sauce and discover it’s secret powers that polarize the culinary world like no other dish.

From filmmaker Roberto Serrini:

My previous documentary with Peter was called “Italy In Bocca” (www.italyinbocca.com if you want to get hungry) and it really put us on the map. We had a few show runners and production companies calling us asking if we were interested in developing the concept into a series. Because we felt like the food film scene was so saturated with these high stake shows we wanted to do something really different that focused on why we love food: because of the way it brings people together. So we wanted to see if we could take a recipe like Penne Alla Vodka, something seemingly inconsequential, and blow it completely out of proportion like they do on all these other cooking shows, really deep diving to the point that you can’t believe anyone went to that kind of trouble to make a simple bowl of pasta. I think it worked.

The mental health impact of religion on the LGBTQIA+ community is unchecked and misunderstood. Alone and largely ignored, queer individuals from conservative, religious communities commit suicide at alarming rates. How many must die before we start talking about it?

https://thingsweshouldnttalkabout.com/

From Robbie Kruithoff:

This film first started when I was doing research for my memoir. Growing up the gay son of two Pentecostal Pastors from a small town in Australia, I know first hand the mental health struggles that religious trauma and suicide survivors face in the religious world. What I didn’t know was how prevalent suicide among religious queer individuals is in today’s society. This spurred me to find other survivors to understand the issues a little better.

New Studies reveal that growing our existing forested lands to capture carbon, preserve biodiversity and protect water, animals and people is one of the best tools we have for fighting climate change and rebuilding a thriving planet. Experts with a deep understanding of forests, carbon and timber share the science and methods we can use to take a step toward a greener, healthier future.

From Andrea Sparrow:

I’ve been making art and photography and writing about climate change and human impact on the planet for a long time. When my colleague, Ben Elkins, asked me to make a film with him about a small forest in Oregon, called the Elliot State Forest, I started reading the science and talking with scientists and conservationists about the forests, wood products and climate change. The issues were huge! The film quickly morphed from being about this tiny forest to talking about these big, valuable forests in our country that are being exploited in unsustainable ways.

The threats of the climate crisis are more and more becoming a reality, posing immense challenges to human and ecosystem health, yet it continuously proves difficult to make any meaningful change. We can’t see meaningfully due to a result of our collective “extinction of experience” with nature driven by urbanization, industrialization, and digitization of our worlds.

From Clay Antonatos :

On a very superficial level, I made elixir to fulfill the thesis requirement for my undergraduate Environmental Studies degree without having to write 75+ pages… making a film sounded much better to me than having to spend the year sitting inside and writing! On a deeper level, though, I made elixir as a way to make myself and my audience more attuned to the natural world that surrounds us. I am a firm believer that a lot of our climate and ecological crises can be attributed to a lack of attention to, care for, and knowledge of the natural world. elixir was a way for me to begin to chip away at the artificial disconnect between humans and nature through an approachable medium (video) in a manner that emphasized personal outdoor experience over the often exclusionary realms of academia and scientific study.

When he discovers a NASA image depicting an unknown object, Carson knows this could be the answer to his questions. Director Statement

I made this film because I was always fascinated with the story of the mysterious Black Knight Satellite. Years later when I heard how passionate Billy Carson was about the topic and his views on where he believed it originated from, I thought this would be an opportunity to open up this investigation in a new way. There are many twists and turns throughout the film, suggesting there is more than one outcome. I thoroughly enjoyed the journey of working with Billy and gaining his knowledge.

From Rebecca Basaure:

As a filmmaker, I am very passionate and motivated to use film to teach, learn and inspire people about conservation. The stakes are so high and giving people who deserve a platform to speak up about environmental degradation and climate change, is not only important but necessary.

In 2019, fires were raging in Bolivia, largely as a result of intentional burning to convert forests to farmland. As our forests continue to burn and our governments continue to put profit over life, it is hard not to feel powerless and betrayed. We want to call them out and make them accountable for not only allowing but fueling these environmental disasters. And we should. But we often overlook those who tirelessly fight to protect our ecosystems, those who save and protect wildlife, and who dedicate their lives to conservation. This film was made to celebrate those people.

Filming was a pleasure, but also a real challenge to do all by myself. I’d do things like plant the Zoom audio recorder in one room, and then shoot into that room from another room to make it feel like there was a bigger crew. Also, because we were shooting in the same studio for the whole time, I prepared by listening to the temp-tracks of these songs (which sort of act like another character in the piece) and tried to establish a visual theme for each song. That way it wouldn’t feel repetitive or boring in the edit.

October 19, 2022 - Filmmaker Sam Katz (Gradually, Then Suddenly The Bankruptcy of Detroit)

GRADUALLY, THEN SUDDENLY: THE BANKRUPTCY OF DETROIT, 93min., USA, Documentary

Once heralded as the spirit of American manufacturing, music and democracy, Detroit descended into disrepair and insolvency over five decades culminating in the largest municipal bankruptcy in U.S. history in 2013. Gradually, Then Suddenly is the story of one city’s climb into and out of bankruptcy toward a future of possibilities.

http://www.bankruptcyofdetroit.com/

Sam Katz Director Statement

I have spent my entire professional life engaged in cities: as an undergraduate student in urban affairs; a graduate student in urban policy analysis: a staffer for the Lindsay Administration in New York; as a program analyst for a Philadelphia civic organization; as a political campaign manager; as a municipal financial advisor; as a candidate for mayor of Philadelphia; as a CEO for a business leadership civic organization; and now as a documentary filmmaker. The opportunity to tell the story of Detroit’s descent into fiscal and service insolvency and through its historic and unprecedented bankruptcy struck me as a filmmaker’s dream comes true.

While serving as Chair of the Board of the Pennsylvania Intergovernmental Cooperation Authority, a state-created body with responsibility for oversight of Philadelphia’s finances, I began monitoring the fiscal distress that was making bankruptcy a real possibility in Detroit. I had spent 25 years of my professional career as a financial advisor to state and local governments across the country while serving as CEO of Public Financial Management (now The PFM Group). I had assisted numerous cities that were undergoing fiscal distress but never one that was a bona fide candidate for bankruptcy. When bankruptcy emerged as a serious option in Detroit, I began thinking that a documentary on a major municipal bankruptcy could make for fascinating and entertaining film. After seeing THE BIG SHORT, which made subprime mortgages and collateralized debt obligations an entertaining and engaging story, I felt confident that the Detroit bankruptcy would be a terrific subject for a documentary.

Commencing in late January 2016, I reached out to many of the people who had played a significant role in the bankruptcy proceedings and spent time researching the story. After numerous trips to Detroit, I knew we needed the participation of the professionals who participated in the bankruptcy case as well as Detroiters who had lived through the city’s decline and eventual bankruptcy. That process took about a year. I was fortunate to assemble a terrific team of experts and production professionals.

Detroit has long been America’s city. It was one of the nation’s most significant centers of industrial production, marketing, design and engineering. It’s music music and culture gave America its soul. Important developments in organized labor, the rise of black political power, racial segregation and the creation of middle class, suburbanization, deindustrialization and ultimately municipal decline were Detroit exports. Bankruptcy and the extraordinary changes occurring in the city are but another in a series of events that make Detroit a bellwether community for the best and worst of America.

In this bankruptcy, the state of Michigan assumed control of the city’s finances and operations through the appointment of an emergency manager. Then it borrowed the powers of the federal government to impair contracts and restructure the city’s finances and operations. One participant described the bankruptcy as “asset-less,” but in fact Detroit owed at least one very valuable asset: the Detroit Institute of the Arts and its priceless collection. Through an ingenious and audacious plan to infuse the city with fresh cash from philanthropy, the DIA and the state of Michigan, Detroit was able to save its museum and art while nearly fully honoring its pension obligation to first responders and dramatically reducing the impact for civilian retirees. The exit from bankruptcy occurred in just 16 months, ending in December 2014. Democracy was suspended. And the process of “kicking the can down the road” finally ended. Complex negotiations involving thousands of creditors required a collaboration of unlikely heroes willing to make previously impossible choices and to do so in a political environment made possible only in bankruptcy.

Today Detroit is alive and aspiring. That is happening precisely as a reflection of the heart and determination of its people and some courageous compromise between major stakeholders. The outcome—the survival of Detroit and an ever-widening sense of possibility for the city’s future—was indeed a grand bargain.

We are all very excited to be poised to tell that story to a national audience.
